The Great Park Ice Learn to Skate Program is excited to offer a new and improved program structure for better progression and development by level for each skater! We offer group classes for all ages and abilities. Even if you have never skated previously, there is an entry level class just perfect for you. These sessions are open to youth and adult participants of all skill levels, with classes tailored to general skating, figure skating, and hockey paths. Space is limited and spots fill quick. New Parent & Tot Orientation

We invite our Parent & Me, Snowplow 1 and Basic 1 families to attend the New Parent & Snowplow Orientation sessions on Monday, January 6 at 5:45pm. Please see below for a breakdown of times:

5:45-6:00pm – Snowplow Drop Off in Niedermayer Room

6:00-6:30pm – Snowplow Orientation in Niedermayer Room

6:00-6:30pm – New Parent Orientation in Selanne Room

We recommend all parents attend live, via zoom, or view our recording to ensure your skater has the best experience possible in our skating program.

In person parent & snowplow sessions will be held on upper level of Rink 1 at the far end of the rink in separate classrooms. While the new parent orientation and snowplow orientations will be held in separate rooms, they are right next to each other and your skater will be nearby!

Ice Explorers (Ages 2.5-4)

Class Structure:
  • 30 minutes of instruction
  • Our most FUN and inviting class available to our youngest skaters! Open to children ages 2.5-4 years, we can’t wait to take your little one step by step through our skating curriculum both off the ice and on the ice. Sessions are 10 weeks long with the first 2 weeks of instruction being spent off ice as we prepare for our adventurous first steps on the ice in week 3!

Low Basic Classes

Low Basic Classes include our Parent & Me, Snowplow 1-4, and Basic 1&2 classes. Beginner skaters should start in our Snowplow 1 (ages 3-6) and Basic 1 (ages 7-17) for their respective age group.

*All classes will have multiple options based on age. Snowplow will be split into groups for ages 3&4 and 5&6, Basic will be split into groups for ages 7&8, 9-11 and 12-17

Parent & Me:

  • Sit and stand up, off-ice
  • Sit and stand up, on-ice 
  • March in place 
  • March forward (8 steps) 
  • March forward, then glide on two feet (2 seconds) 
  • Dip in place for 5 seconds without falling

Snowplow 1:

  • Sit and stand up, off-ice

Snowplow 2 (must pass Snowplow 1:

  • Backward walking, toes turned inward, shifting weight (4-6 steps)
  • Backward wiggles (6 in a row)
  • Forward swizzles (2-3 in a row)
  • Beginning snowplow stop motion - in place or holding onto barrier
  • Two-foot hop, in place (optional)

Snowplow 3 (must pass Snowplow 2):

  • Forward skating (8-10 strides)
  • Beginning forward one-foot glide for a count of 2 (right & left)
  • Forward swizzles (4-6 in a row)
  • Backward swizzles (2-3 in a row)
  • Moving forward snowplow stop using one or two feet
  • Curves

Snowplow 4 (must pass Snowplow 3):

  • Forward skating
  • Beginning one-foot glide, half the length of skater's height
  • Backward swizzles (4-6 in a row)
  • Rocking horse - one forward, one backward swizzle, repeat twice
  • Two-foot turns from forward to backward, in place (both directions)
  • Two-foot hop, in place

Basic 1:

  • Sit and stand up – on-ice
  • March forward across the ice
  • Forward two-foot glide for a count of 4
  • Glide on two feet and Dip for a count of 4
  • Forward swizzles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Backward wiggles without coming to a stop (6 in a row)
  • Student will stop using a one or two foot snowplow stop

*Bonus skill: Two-foot hop in place

Basic 2 (must pass Basic 1 or Snowplow 4):

  • Scooter pushes (right and left)
  • Forward one-foot glides for a count of 4 (right and left)
  • Backward two-foot glide equal to skater's height
  • Rocking Horse
  • Backward Swizzles without coming to a complete stop (6 in a row)
  • Two foot turns in place (both directions)
  • Moving forward snowplow stop (one or two feet)

High Basic Classes

High Basic Classes include our Basic 3-6 level classes. 

Note: Skaters must wear figure skates for the below classes. No hockey skates are allowed.  Strongly recommended all skaters have their own skates to proficiently complete skills at these levels. 

Basic 3 (must pass Basic 2):

  • Beginning forward stroking showing correct use of blade
  • Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle with proper arm and head position - 6 in a row (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Moving forward to backward two-foot turns on a circle holding the exit of the turn for a count of 2 (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Beginning backward one-foot glides for a count of 2 (right & left)
  • Backward snowplow stop showing an obvious skidding motion (right and left)
  • Forward slalom - 4 to 6 slalom pushes across the ice

*Bonus Skill: Forward pivots - clockwise & counterclockwise

Basic 4 (must pass Basic 3):

  • Forward outside edge on a circle for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Forward inside edge on a circle for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Forward crossovers without use of toe pick and showing two defined pushes (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle - 6 to 8 pumps without coming to a stop (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Backward one-foot glides for a count of 4 (right and left)
  • Beginning two-foot spin - up to two revolutions

*Bonus Skill: Forward lunges, both legs

Basic 5 (must pass Basic 4):

  • Backward outside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward inside edge on a circle without wobbling for a count of 6 (right and left)
  • Backward crossovers - 4 to 6 crossovers with the foot sliding over and minimum toe pushing (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Forward outside three-turn holding both the forward outside and backward inside edge for 3 seconds (right and left)
  • Advanced two-foot spin (4-6)
  • Hockey stop - both directions

*Bonus Skill: Side toe hop, right & left

Basic 6 (must pass basic 5):

  • Forward inside three-turn holding both the forward inside and backward outside edge for 3 seconds (right and left)
  • Forward inside open mohawk from standstill - both directions
  • Moving backward to forward two-foot turns on a circle (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Backward stroking
  • Beginning one-foot spin - 2-4 revolutions
  • T-stops - stopping foot must be on an outside edge (right and left)
  • Bunny hop
  • Forward spiral on a straight line with free leg at hip level or higher for a count of 6 (right or left)

*Bonus Skill: Shoot the duck, right or left

Basic 3 (ages 7 & under)

  • Make up passes for Academy Prep will include one OFF ice make up class in addition to the standard public session make up pass. 

Note: Skaters should have their own skates for Academy Prep classes in order to be able to complete the skills at these levels.

Hockey Classes

Hockey classes include Hockey Tot & Hockey 2-4. New skaters should start in Snowplow 1 (ages 3-6) and Basic 1 (ages 7-17).  After passing Snowplow 3, tots may progress to Hockey Tot.  After passing Basic 1, youth may progress to Hockey 2. 

Note: Skaters must wear hockey skates for the below classes. No figure skates are allowed.

Hockey Tot (Must pass - Snowplow 3):

  • Proper hockey stance forward and backward
  • Forward T-Stride, 4-6 on each foot
  • One-foot glide for two times the skater’s height (right and left)
  • Rocking Horse - one forward double c-cut, one backward double c-cut, repeat twice
  • Forward double c-cuts without coming to a complete stop (4-6 in a row)
  • Backward double c-cuts without coming to a complete stop (4-6 in a row)
  • Two-foot hockey twists - 2 sets.
  • Snowplow stop
  • Curves - two-foot curves in a deep knee bend in both directions.
  • Supermans - skaters will skate forward and then fall and slide on to their stomach and quickly get up.

Hockey 2 (Must pass - Basic 1 or Snowplow 4):

  • Forward strides using 45 degree V-push, focus on good recovery and alternating arm drive
  • Forward one-foot push and glide (right and left)
  • Forward C-Cuts: single leg (right and left) and alternating feet (right and left) in a straight line
  • Backward hustle or march, then glide on two feet
  • Backward swizzles / double c-cuts (4 to 6 in a row)
  • Backward C-cuts, single leg (right and left) and alternating feet (right and left) in a straight line
  • Two-foot moving snowplow stop

*Bonus Skill: Scooter or skateboard push, on circle (right & left)

Hockey 3 (Must pass Hockey 2):

  • Lateral crossover march (both directions)
  • Forward C-cuts (1/2 swizzle pumps) on a circle, both directions
  • Forward outside edges on half circles (large C’s), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink
  • Forward inside edges on half circles (large C’s), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink
  • Backward C-cuts (1/2 swizzle pumps) on a circle, both directions
  • Backward snowplow stops: One foot and two feet V-stop
  • One-foot moving snowplow stop (Right and Left), introduce 1/4 turn with hips to hockey stop

*Bonus Skill: Forward stops and starts

Hockey 4 (Must pass Hockey 3):

  • Quick starts using forward V-start
  • Backward one-foot glide, right and left
  • Forward crossover glides (clockwise and counter-clockwise). Hold feet in crossed position for 2 counts
  • Backward crossover glides (clockwise and counter-clockwise). Hold feet in crossed position for 2 counts
  • Forward crossovers on circle, clockwise and counterclockwise (4-6 each)
  • Backward crossovers on circle, clockwise and counterclockwise (4-6 each)
  • Hockey stops (stopping to the left and to the right, with speed)

*Bonus Skill: Forward to backward mohawk pivots (both directions, right and left) from powerful, full strides

Hockey Tot (Skaters must have passed Snowplow 3):

  • Tuesdays, 4:30-5:00 p.m.

Adult 3 (Must pass Adult 2):

  • Forward stroking using the blade properly (begin with repetitive one-foot pushes)
  • Forward half-swizzle pumps on the circle; 6 to 8 in a row, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Moving forward to backward and backward to forward two-foot turn on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Backward skating into a long two-foot glide
  • Forward chasses on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Backward snowplow stop, R and L

Adult 4 (Must pass Adult 3):

  • Forward outside edge on a circle, R and L

Adult Edge (Must pass Adult 6):

  • Utilizing varying exercises and patterns, this class will focus on improved edge quality & control.

Adult Jump & Spin (must have passed Adult 6):

  • Skaters will learn basic spin positions and an introduction to single jumps

Adult Hockey Skating Skills (must have passed Adult 4):

  • Class will focus on skating skills and drills to help players new to the game or looking to enhance their control, speed, and agility on the ice

Adult Jump & Spin (Must have passed Adult 6):

  • Thursdays, 6:40-7:20 p.m.

Adult Hockey Skating Skills (must have passed Adult 4):

  • Tuesdays, 6:40-7:20 p.m.
Class Structure:
  • 5 minutes on ice warm up
  • 30 minutes of instruction
  • 5 minutes of supervised practice
Cost:
  • $370 for 10 classes (Tuesdays)
  • $333 for 9 classes (Thursdays) 
    • No make-ups, credits or refunds permitted

Make-up Class/Missed Class Policy
  • You may request ONE (1) practice / public session pass per missed class
  • NO credits or refunds will be issued for missed classes
Practice Pass/Public Session Policy
  • Included in your Session Fee is 10 practice/public session passes that can be used for the participant and/or family/friend. 
  • Passes will be automatically added to your account upon registration. Passes expire the last day of the session
